The theory that inner
ear deficiency may be a cause of cot death is already
disproved by well-established cot death epidemiology:
1. It is well known that bedsharing increases cot death
risk. Are the
proponents of the "inner ear theory" seriously
suggesting that a baby's
inner ear varies depending on whether the baby sleeps in
an adult-sized bed
versus in a small cot? Obviously, any such suggestion
would be untenable.
2. Again, it is well known that face-up sleeping reduces
cot death risk.
So are the researchers suggesting that a baby's inner
ear varies depending
on whether the baby is face-up or face-down in the cot?
Again, untenable.
Some of the reporting of the "inner ear" research has
been highly
irresponsible. It is very likely that many parents are
already needlessly
concerned about "cot death risk" posed by their baby's
inner ears, when the
actual situation is that the inner ear theory for the
cause of cot death is
already patently disproved by longstanding cot death
epidemiology.
